Avena (Wild oat) Integrated Weed Management Model now available

A new Weed Integrated Management Tool is available!

The Avena (Wild Oat) Integrated Management Tool (AIM) has been created to simulate “What-if” scenarios around wild oat weed control, and its impact on yield and profit.

Based on an “average” year in the Northern Australian grain region, without climatic variability.

AIM Can help provide answers to questions such as:

  • Which combination of control options and rotations provides the best overall management system in the long-term?
  • How fast can a wild oats problem develop?
  • How can I maintain my income if I cannot rely on herbicides?
  • If a pasture phase is included, how long should it be for?
  • Is it worth investing in specific machinery? Is a particular treatment (e.g. green manuring) a profitable practice? If so, under what circumstances?

The AIM model utilises assumptions built into the AHRI Ryegrass Integrated Weed Management (RIM) model, which was developed by David Pannell, UWA and Vanessa Stewart, WA DPIRD and updated in 2013 by Myrtille Lacoste under the supervision of Stephen Powles, AHRI former director. The AIM model was developed by David Thornby (Innokas Intellectual Services) with support from Dr Michael Walsh and Caleb Squires from the University of Sydney. This project is a GRDC investment.
